A Mental Experiment: Planned Parenthood FundingConservatives in the US House of Representatives are out to defund Planned Parenthood (PP). Liberals are outraged, saying that this is an attack on women. According to liberals, even if you're anti-abortion you should be in favor of government money for PP, for the money the government gives to PP goes to contraceptive services, not abortion services. Not one penny of government money pays for abortions. By helping with contraception PP prevents unwanted pregnancies and thereby lowers the number of abortions.
To test the validity of this liberal argument, try the following mental experiment.
There is a (non-PP) contraception clinic that receives government money to be used for contraceptive purposes only. At some point Mr. X purchases this clinic from its original owners and changes its name to "The Aryan Clinic." You see, Mr. X, it so happens, is a neo-Nazi. From his newly purchased clinic he issues lots and lots of anti-semitic and anti-black propaganda. Some members of Congress propose cutting off government funds to his clinic. But he responds by saying that not one penny of government money is used for neo-Nazi purposes; all the money goes for contraceptive purposes.
How would liberal members of Congress vote in this situation? Would they be persuaded by Mr. X's "not one penny goes to neo-Nazi propaganda" argument? Of course not.
Liberals should therefore at least understand, though they would no doubt not agree with, the attitude of conservative members of Congress regarding PP. If you believe, as conservatives do, that abortion is a species of homicide, you would no more wish to fund the non-abortion work of an abortion clinic than you would wish to fund the non-neo-Nazi work of a neo-Nazi clinic.
