Finding Thankfulness

Society and television commercials have trained us that the time between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve is a happy magical time when nothing bad is supposed to happen. But sometimes life knocks the wind out of people regardless of what the calendar says.

During times those difficult times in the cycle of life when it seems there is nothing to be thankful about a person can usually find a few things for which to give thanks. They can still experience a moment of peace and comfort, some angel placed on Earth in the form of a friend or family member that bring moments of joy and thanksgiving. Finding food in the fridge or pantry, resting in a safe place at night are great blessings to enjoy and for which to give thanks.

Even when the Fates have ignored the calendar and have brought heartache during the holidays it is still possible to focus on the intangibles that are where the greatest sources of Thanksgiving exist. A beautiful sunrise or sunset, taking a walk and looking for that which is beautiful in the world. Stopping to breathe in and take a moment to appreciate the little things that lift a person's heart up when it's been knocked down. When thinking of lost loves think of the happy memories and happy times and not of the pain that comes near the end of a relationship whether that end was a death or an agreement to go separate ways. A famous quote reminds us to be happy that something happened not sad that it ended.

When a person shifts focus from that which is missing to that which is beautiful, loving and peaceful about the world, more wonderful things are found. Because human beings always find what they look for, and so as a person goes into the world and looks for things to be thankful for, they begin to take notice of the wonderful things that were there all along. This Thanksgiving take some time to be thankful. To selectively appreciate and absorb the feeling of gratitude for the all of the wonderful things in life, it is a way to heal the hurts of the world and to live a truly satisfying life.

Happy Thanksgiving!
