Frog: Water, Healing, and Renewal

If you've ever sat by a waterfall, you're well aware of the calming and soothing effect of flowing water. You might even call it healing.
Water is one of the most powerful symbols of renewal. When we think of it, we imagine release, acceptance, and sometimes the relief of surrendering one's resistance. In this sense, water represents the flow of healing energy. One of the animals most strongly connected with the healing energies of water is the frog.

The frog is born in water, spends its early life there, and never goes far from it. Because of this several cultural traditions, including North and South American Native and Celtic, identify this amphibian with healing.

In the Amazon rainforest, natives believe that the frog calls the rains when they are needed. This may be for reasons of drought or because the earth needs to be cleansed and replenished.

Many alternative healers believe that full healing requires connecting to one's deepest emotions. Here again, water plays a literal role. When we fail to release emotional toxins, they can poison our spirit, leaving us feeling parched and lifeless. Sometimes the most powerful healing comes after having a good cry that relieves and releases pent-up emotions.

If we are brought up to believe that tears are shameful and childish, we deprive ourselves of a powerful form of emotional release. With the help of frog medicine, we can begin to experience tears as being as natural and necessary as rain.

The Magic of Honesty

The story of the Frog Prince, which has different versions in many cultures, is basically about a spoiled young princess who befriends a frog. In several versions, after she kisses him, he turns into a handsome prince.

When we befriend our emotions, even the ones we strongly wish we didn't have, we discover that the spell that has kept them inside us is broken. We learn to appreciate the power of feeling, and like the magically appearing prince, what we experience emotionally becomes beautiful to us.
