The Five Essential Parts of Magical Existence: Earth
When the world was new and as yet untouched by man, the Old Gods walked among the forests, bathed in the streams, flew through the air and basked in the glow of the sun. Then they stepped into the realm of the spirit and gave over the earth to men and from that time on men have ruled the earth and the Gods have ruled the spirit.
Earth was given to us by the Gods as our home and our resting place. We are to honor the earth and respect it's creatures and creation. The world of flowers, trees, animals and other living beings are gifts to us from the Ancient Ones and are to be treated as such.
The earth also gives us form. The spirit entered the dust and became man. The earth feeds us with her bounty, provides the means to clothe ourselves, to shelter ourselves. This is why it is fitting to offer praise to the Gods for all that we have been given.
We should also remember that the earth is the resting place of the spirit, a sanctuary that we all must honor. For it is upon the earth that exists the secret entrances, guarded by the hidden ones, that we find the pathways that will lead us back towards the veil of the mists, back to the spirit world.
Yet earth is both of this world and of the otherworld. Earth is the host to all of the other elements besides her own. Air blows upon her surface, fire ignites within her belly and bursts forth from her mountains, water flows through her valleys and the spirit marks upon her skin the secret entrances back into the mist. Earth is our dwelling place until we take the journey into the mist and to the otherworld. While we exist in human form, we must honor and respect the earth as both our creator and our creation.
The gnomes are the protectors of the earth. They roam freely in the dark caverns and caves, guarding our treasures and making their homes beneath the sacred oak and other blessed trees.
From time to time, the gnomes do play tricks upon the humans and make mischief and jokes. Yet for all their mischief, they are kind and good hearted. They make the difficult times easier to bear and offer us unexpected gifts during hard times. We should be courteous and thank them, even during good times.
The magical symbol of the earth is the pentacle. Perfectly round and made by your own hand from stone or wood. It must then fit within the palm of your own hand and it should bear the inscription of the magical name given to you by the ancient ones. On the side that contains your magical name, you should inscribe a five-pointed star. For that star says everything. It is the form of humankind, the spirit of humanity, and the way of the Gods. It is a symbol of all this is.
Within the sacred magic circle, the earth is called forth from the bitter cold north. It's sacred gemstone is the garnet.
And now the circle is complete.
