Wiccan Ritual Tools: The Chalice
The chalice, also called the cup or goblet, is a Wiccan ritual tool that symbolizes the Goddess and fertility. It has several uses in Wiccan ritual and magic including holding the ritual beverage for the cakes and wine ritual. This ritual is also known as "cakes and ale" or the "simple feast". Regardless of what you call it, the chalice is used to facilitate this rite.
The chalice is associated with the element of water and is symbolic of the Goddess and/or the womb of the Goddess. It is essentially a miniature and so harbors the same associations. It is often given a place on the Wiccan altar near the other Goddess objects such as the cauldron and Goddess candle or statue.
The chalice can be made of any material and of any shape and size. You can often find them in silver, brass, crystal, glass, pottery, etc. You could even use a drinking horn instead of an actual cup for your chalice. It can have handles or you might decide to go with a traditional goblet-shaped chalice.
My own chalice is made of brass with a pentacle inscribed on the front. You can inscribe symbols on the chalice if you wish or just use a plain cup. The important thing is that it is beautiful and meaningful to you. I have seen many delightful cups that could be used as a chalice in flea markets and antique stores. There are also a plethora of inexpensive chalices that can be purchased from Wiccan supply stores and online shops.
What is essential in the selection of a chalice is its ability to hold liquid and your ability to drink from it. In almost every Wiccan ritual there is a drinking of liquid to toast or honor the God and Goddess. This is also a means of grounding after performing Wiccan magical work. Consuming food and liquid brings you back to earth, so to speak. This is why there is a need for the cakes and wine ritual.
Once you have selected a chalice, it is important to consecrate it before you use it in Wiccan ritual and magic. Select a suitable tool consecration ritual or write one of your own. Dedicate the chalice for use as a Wiccan ritual tool and use it for no other purpose. After consecration, it becomes a sacred ritual tool and should be honored as such.
